Darkness my sleep delight
Message from the dark side …
It’s fascinating the contrast between day light and night light. We love the daylight, our eyes see much better in daylight than in darkness and that, ‘start of the day’ time can be so delicious. First light, a freshness of a new day.
Yet, when I want to sleep well I cannot do this when there’s daylight blasting through my window, zooming directly into my retinas. For some, like Farrbott www.farrbott.com, can drop off to sleep, have a snooze, ‘forty winks‘ in full daylight. Not me. Even with dark fabric curtains to shield the light, a chink of the ‘light stuff’ escapes, trickles it’s way into my room. So even with eye lids closed, is enough to give my brain the message that it’s not slumbertime yet.
Napping, like the traditional ‘forty winks‘ can provide an excellent catch up for those who’s sleep is disturbed. Forty minutes being a good amount of time to nap but not drift into the deeper sleep cycle. More on this in future posts.
Mothers are told NOT to put the light on if little one wakes in the night for a wee or a reassuring cuddle. If we are even momentarily disturbed with light into our eyes during night time sleep, the brain’s message regarding Melatonin production is disturbed and thinks it’s waking time. Hence it will be more difficult to return to sleep.
Perhaps using a red-light torch may fool the brain into thinking it’s still nighttime. Anyone who’s tried this, let me know.
In order to maintain sanity and a good sleep pattern I often wear a sleep eye mask. I adore, am even slightly addicted to my all black, soft cushioned eye mask from LEWIS N CLARK (link below). This ‘gift of darkness’ was from Farrbott www.farrbott.com and I initially thought how unromantic and practical. Bit like handing over a new vacuum cleaner or ironing board! Now it is my night time sleep companion, that lulls me into darkness my sleep delight.
The eye mask gives me deep calm as the soft under eye pads sooth over worked eyes and my over worked brain. Closing down the external world. Darkness my welcomed accompanist to sleep world.
Sleep Well TIP: An emergency eye mask can be made of a soft small towel draped over the eyes, allow for sufficient ventilation around the nose and mouth.
